James Andrew McAvoy was born on April 21, 1979, in Glasgow, Scotland. The son of a builder and a nurse, he was the product of a broken home before the age of 7 and consequently lived with his Glasgow grandparents James and Mary Johnstone. Although he would make amends with his mother, James McAvoy would never again speak with his father.
A Catholic school education got James McAvoy thinking about joining the priesthood, but a chance meeting at a career fair introduced him to David Hayman, a working actor from Scotland. A few months later, David Hayman called the aspiring actor and invited him to audition for a key role in 1995′s abuse-themed The Near Room. James McAvoy won the role and earned a ticket to the Scottish Academy of Dance and Music. Upon his graduation, a dry spell ensued that convinced James McAvoy that military service might do him well. Ironically, in 2001, he instead won a role in the Steven Spielberg-produced war TV miniseries Band of Brothers.
