His Dark Materials

Written by marcie on June 10 2018

Looking to finally do better justice to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials novels than the abortive cinematic version could, the BBC’s adaptation of the fantasy story is adding to its cast. James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Clarke Peters are all aboard.

National Treasure’s Jack Thorne has written the adaptation of the trilogy, which comprises the books Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Materials’ narrative follows the adventures of Lyra Belacqua (Logan’s Dafne Keen) and Will Parry as they explore parallel universes inhabited by witches, armoured bears, and daemons. Thorne is crafting an eight-part series that will be shown in the UK and shopped around to international broadcasters, with the likes of Amazon and Netflix interested in rights worldwide.

McAvoy’s on to be ruthless adventurer Lord Asriel, while Wilson is reportedly playing Lyra’s mother. Peters, meanwhile, is the master of Jordan College, Oxford, where Lyra initially grows up. Tom Hooper will direct the series, which will also feature Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby. We’d expect it to air next year, but there’s no formal date yet.

His Dark Materials ropes in the Magisterium to stop spoilers from the TV show leaking

Written by marcie on August 04 2018

The BBC want to make sure they’re keeping production on their adaptation of His Dark Materials a mystery, and they’ve roped in the Magisterium to help keep an eye out. The warning was issued as fans saw Gyptians filming scenes in Oxford. So far, everyone has been keeping schtum and we might have the Magisterium to thank for that. An ominous message was tweeted out from the show’s Twitter account urging fans not to share ‘clandestine materials’ online as ‘social media is a hotbed for heresy’. The Magisterium feature in the trilogy by Philip Pullman. Star Mat Fraser also reassured fans he wouldn’t be getting on the wrong side of the shady Magisterum either, responding to a fan on Twitter: ‘Can’t tell you sorry…because Gyptians don’t gossip’.

Meet the cast of His Dark Materials

Written by marcie on September 12 2018

It’s been dubbed “the cast of dreams” by Jack Thorne, the screenwriter for the BBC1 adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials – and we’re tempted to agree.

The full line-up for the forthcoming series features a dizzying number of A-list names from both sides of the pond, from X-Men’s James McAvoy to Hamilton creator and Mary Poppins Returns star Lin-Manuel Miranda.

But who else is starring in this ensemble cast – and where have you seen them before?

BBC’s His Dark Materials TV Series Renewed for Second Season

Written by marcie on September 18 2018

While production is underway for the first season of BBC’s new drama His Dark Materials, based on the Phillip Pullman book trilogy, an eight-part Season 2 has already been ordered.

His Dark Materials is shaping up to be a huge undertaking for the BBC. The ensemble cast comprises James McAvoy, Dafne Keen and Lin Manuel Miranda, with the series already considered one of the most expensive British shows ever.

Keen, known for her role as X-23 in Logan, stars as Lyra, an orphan from a parallel universe. Miranda’s will portray the adventurer Lee Scoresby, with McAvoy playing Lyra’s father, Lord Asriel.

Rounding out the cast are Clarke Peters (The Wire, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) as Lyra’s master and the person who raises her, Ruth Wilson (The Affair) as Marisa Coulter — Lord Asriel’s former lover — and Ariyon Bakare (Rogue One) as the charming antagonist Lord Boreal.

Dafne Keen’s real-life father, Will Keen from Wolf Hall, is also a featured player in the role of Father MacPhail.

In development since 2016, there is no word on a premiere date for His Dark Materials. The first book in the trilogy, The Golden Compass, , was adapted into a movie in 2007.

His Dark Materials TV series FIRST LOOK

Written by marcie on September 18 2018

It won millions of fans all over the world with its fantasy universe full of witches, daemons, and armoured polar bears.

And Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials is set to come to life on the small screen, with the first pictures of the set in Llangynidr Quarry in Crickhowell, Wales released.

The hotly anticipated series, which will air on the BBC on 2019, and stars James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson, was originally green-lit in 2015 with an eight-episode series.

It is based on the books in Pullman’s trilogy, Northern Lights (1995), The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000).

The striking first photos from the set show the construction of a ramshackle town in the quarry, with a rickety wooden boarding house and soot-stained church dominating the landscape.

A derelict barn with boxes stacked inside was also visible, with brightly coloured pick-up trucks helping with the construction.

Catching the eye was a rust-riddled boat at one side of the quarry, which was perched on a stand, with a quirky looking stone well in the corner.

HBO has joined the BBC to Produce the Series: At the Crossroads of Worlds

Written by marcie on September 18 2018

The project to launch the adaptation of a series of At the Crossroads of Worlds is not new. It’s been several years that the development is in progress, but it is good news (or rather, several) is in the offing ! In fact, we just learned that HBO was going to co-produce the programme alongside the BBC.

HBO IN THE RACE AND TWO SEASONS MINIMUM

The other good news is that this series is planned for at least two seasons. With the american chain that has just entered the dance, with studios Bad Wolf ” and New Line Cinema, the BBC ensures that its program will be distributed outside the United Kingdom.

Filming began this month in Cardiff under the direction of Tom Hooper , to whom we owe the film The king’s Speech. The adaptation of the work of Philip Pullman offers therefore two seasons, the first of which will be comprised of eight episodes. For the time being, we do not know yet the exact date of broadcast of this series, which is not expected before next year.

Twelve years ago, the best-selling Pullman had already been adapted for the cinema but had not seduced the public and the critics. This series aims to catch up with the shooting because, according to the rumours, this production would be the most expensive ever carried out in the United Kingdom.

Next to casting, we will be reunited with James McAvoy who will play Lord Asriel, Dafne Keen in Lyra, Ruth Wilson , who plays Marisa Coulter. The distribution will be complemented by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Clarke Peters, Ariyon Bakare, Anne-Marie Duff, or Will Keen.

In France, the series will be broadcast on OCS.

‘His Dark Materials’ HBO Air Date, Plot, Cast Details For Season 1 and 2

Written by marcie on May 03 2019

HBO’s next epic series is set to premiere later this year and it will likely fill up the hole that Game of Thrones will leave behind. The network will launch His Dark Materials in a collaboration with BBC and it’s also based on a book with a large following.

Philip Pullman wrote and published His Dark Materials from 1995 to 2000, which also led to the development of a feature film. In 2007, The Golden Compass starring Nicole Kidman hit the big screen but the movie failed to do well at the box office so plans for the sequels were scrapped.

In 2015, BBC announced that it will be developing His Dark Materials as an eight-part TV series to supposedly launch in 2017. The show, however, took longer to come together but BBC also inked a partnership with HBO for the release.

His Dark Materials follows the story of Lyra Belacqua (played by Dafne Keen) who discovers a door to a mystical parallel universe. The book is supposed to be a young adult series but the story carries themes like the temptation and follies of men. Some compare His Dark Materials to a retelling of the classic John Milton literary piece Paradise Lost.

Aside from the Keen, who is best known to fans for the movie Logan, the BBC/HBO drama will also feature James McAvoy as Lord Asrael, Ruth Wilson as Marissa Coulter, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby. Georgina Campbell is also in the cast as the journalist Adele Starminster, while Shameless actress Anna-Marie Duff will play Ma Costa.

Three Game of Thrones actors are also in the cast — Ian Gelder as Charles the librarian scholar, Lucien Msamati as John Faa, and James Cosmo as Farder Coram. For a complete listing of the star-studded ensemble of His Dark Materials, check out the press release from HBO.

His Dark Materials season 1 finished filming in December 2018 and by February the following year, BBC released the show’s first tease. The first installment will cover the trilogy’s first book “Northern Lights” (also known as “The Golden Compass” in the U.S.) and from the looks of it, the show will be a faithful adaptation.

The cast and crew will soon be back on the set to film His Dark Materials season 2 based on the second book “The Subtle Knife.” According to Walesonline, the whole series will be told in forty episodes, which will be spread out in five seasons.
